Vibrational spectroscopy techniques, which have traditionally been used to provide non-destructive, rapid, and relevant information on microbial systematics, are useful for classification and identification. In conjunction with advanced chemometrics, infrared spectroscopy enables the biochemical signatures from microbiological structures to be extracted and analysed. In addition, a number of recent studies have shown that Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy can help to understand the molecular basis of events, such as the adaptive tolerance responses expressed by bacteria when exposed to stress conditions in the environment, i.e. environments that cells confront in food and during food processing. The proposed Brief will discuss the published experimental techniques, data-processing algorithms, and approaches used in FT-IR spectroscopy to assist in the characterization and identification of microorganisms, to assess the mechanisms of bacterial inactivation by food processing technologies and antimicrobial compounds, to monitor the spore and membrane properties of foodborne pathogens in changing environments, to detect stress-injured microorganisms in food-related environments, to assess dynamic changes in bacterial populations, and to study bacterial tolerance responses.

FOURIER TRANSFORM INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY ~ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (short FT-IR) is one of the techniques that are used today for mea-suring the intensity of infrared radiation as a function of frequency or wavelength. Infrared radiation is invisible electromagnetic radiation just bellow the red colour of the visible electromagnetic spectrum, with wavelength range from 700 nm to 1 mm. Until 1800s it was not recognized .

(PDF) Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy ~ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy probes the vibrational properties of amino acids and cofactors, which are sensitive to minute structural changes.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy applied to food ~ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) technology has substantial potential as a quantitative quality control tool for the food industry. FTIR analysis methods are convenient, rapid and automatable, and in conjunction with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) technology, dramatically simplify sample handling. The key elements of FTIR spectroscopy are presented along with a selection of methods under .

Near‐Infrared Spectroscopy in Food Analysis - Osborne ~ Near‐infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is based on the absorption of electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths in the range 780–2500 nm. NIR spectra of foods comprise broad bands arising from overlapping absorptions corresponding mainly to overtones and combinations of vibrational modes involving C H, O H and N H chemical bonds. The concentrations of constituents such as water, protein, fat and .

Infrared Spectroscopy for Food Quality Analysis and ~ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is considered to be one of the most powerful techniques for chemical analysis in recent years, and is making new inroads into several applications in biological analysis, including food. Fourier transformation (FT) is a mathematical procedure that is applied to the interferograms to obtain the spectrum. Essentially, FT breaks down the .

Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy - Wikipedia ~ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a technique used to obtain an infrared spectrum of absorption or emission of a solid, liquid or gas. An FTIR spectrometer simultaneously collects high-spectral-resolution data over a wide spectral range. This confers a significant advantage over a dispersive spectrometer, which measures intensity over a narrow range of wavelengths at a time.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy : developments ~ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is a powerful tool for identifying types of chemical bonds in a molecule by producing an infrared absorption spectrum that is like a molecular "fingerprint". FTIR is most useful for identifying chemicals that are either organic or inorganic. It can be utilised to quantitate some components of an unknown mixture, as well as to the analysis of .
